Why are Sherlock and Watson never arrested for letting criminals get away?

Sherlock and Watson are usually called upon to assist Lestrade(the inspector) in his cases. As the hero of the short stories; Sherlock is supposed to be the wizard; who dazzles everybody with his brilliance; finds clues; and outwits the villain.

Unless the writer Arthur Conan Doyle wanted to put him in trouble with the law; which he rarely does(unless he’s underground against Moriarty; or “The Man With The Twisted Lip” where he’s disguised as an old man in an opium den); they are quite staid compared to contemporary times.
