More Power To The People; Local Decisions And Inclusion

By Sunil Kumar

Social gatherings can be a harbinger of things to come; or the lack of change within. Freedom of expression is the best thing in Indian democracy; if it is not hampered by vested interests. In that respect Arvind Kejriwal comes across a new visionary; even if he admits himself that there is no specific political vision in mind.

The bracketing of the Aam Aadmi Party as anarchists seems to miss the point. They could be forgiven for doing so; for as everybody knows; it is a case of “kissa kursi ka”. In his interview; Kejriwal proposes placing power in the hands of the people; a cause that has been nobly espoused by many people since Nehru and Gandhi; but not implemented in practice.

The media in its infinite but skewed wisdom is in search of newsbytes; and the fanciful search for greater TRPs leading to increased revenues. What the Aam Aadmi party atleast overtly proposes is real democracy. The main ruling party for better or worse has a depraved image; due to the vitriolic pronouncements of its leaders; who come across as elitist sycophantic types; who are hankering for the next major upheaval to cement their place in Indian polity.

The opposition party’s constant attacks have enlightened a large section of the Indian population of the true nature of those in power. But; as Kejriwal has pointed out; their house is not that clean either. The world of Indian democracy would be better served if he had a more holistic merger of ideas; and true change is actually possible across the length and breadth of our great nation.
