The Indian States of Amrika

By Sunil Kumar

Old-school is good times. Growing up in the country nowadays is a mishmash of tongues; a bastardized lingo that sounds neither here nor there. Now that the “bhais” and “bens”, along with marketing wonderkids have declared war on propriety by twisting the Indian version of the English language into a pseudo-American clone; I wonder about the fate of refinement.

It was the brutes out in England who gave us this wonderful “blah-blah” that impinges on my consciousness. Now that I know that ’em bed-hopping Lords and Ladies(a miniscule minority) are surrounded by “sods” and “mates” twisting collective vocalization; and messing with the language; it turns out that English is like a whore; it sleeps with all the natives of the world.

Classy kitsch in “Slum”bai. Bourgeois adherence in Delhi. Sycophancy in the South. Assumed “intellect” and vocal protest in the East. English used everywhere globally as a “khichdi” along with native tongues; a never-ending assault. All of ’em natives wear the mantle of self-righteousness. Yesterday is far away; existence should be more wonderful; so that I can think in nonsense limericks and inspiring verse.
