Her

“I’ve traveled the world and the seven seas; everybody is looking for something. “Me, myself and me”- Mr. Kumar.

Before this post becomes more of me, here’s something about “Her”; the movie about OS love. With the impersonalization of the world a semi-complete exercise; the scenario depicted in this movie could be a reality; maybe; in the distant future.

When the world of humans becomes too much; you fall in love with operating systems; especially when Hollywood produces it at mega-budgets; and the voice of a nubile Scarlett Johansson. A nerd who composes letters for a living; Joaquin Phoenix lives a closeted life in a futuristic city; circa 2025; indulging in immersive video games; and communicating with everybody via voice SMSes.

For the intelligent; no “firang” movie is complete without an ode to “sense and sensuality”; and so we have this in some measure. The Spike Jonze screenplay is innovative and different; but a little boring. There’s something about technology and gadgets; but not when it’s all about the virtual domain; the world’s jaded. All ye white men; the Indians and the Chinese; everybody in the globe; it should be something more like yesterday; a world that was simpler in the light of day.

So; this server farm of a movie then informs me about how the OS(a supercomputer) with self-actualization abilities(human emotions) proceeds to impact the Phoenix character’s emotions; making him more involved with the OS; rather than his real wife; who he’s actually divorcing. With a simple command; he could have changed the voice to a male one; but heck; no mega-budget Hollywood flick then.

Ae Khodai; Amar Brain ka interface in the world of technology. Bhalo Bhashi Nathi! Augmented reality; yes. Landscapes on display; yes; good; the trains speeding through the countryside; and a city in China; the skyscraper monument of Shanghai; I believe punctuate the movie’s visual leitmotif. Love high-minded words and tall buildings you see.

Somebody find me an OS to date! That’s what the movie should have been named. So; in the romantic world of “outsideIndia” wood; where gay and lesbian love is believed to be just another bonking ritual; we have Phoenix’s colleague also finding a female OS to keep herself entertained. As the AI wants to “enjoy” itself; mathematical formulae; absurd jokes and 500+ other lovers follow suit.

Why this, Why this, world is Kolaveri D? So; after the usual “it’s all love”; the OS decides that it has to embark on a spiritual quest for self-realization. Phoenix’s character is left in the lurch; and the movie ends with he and the female colleague looking out of the floor at a dazzling skyscraper-lined mirage of buildings.

What did I think about “Her”? Interesting experiment; but a world like this should not come in existence; along with other “c’est terrible” scifi scenarios. Until then; to the world of movies; until I meet again(me, myself and me).
