Happy New Horror

By Sunil Kumar

Chennai Express may soon lose its No.1 position to the new kid on the block “Happy New Horror”; ahem, Happy New Year. Why waste my time even mentioning this film on my site? Eminently forgettable; “Happy New Year” is slapstick comedy at its worst; and as most Indian film buffs know; may probably top the charts this year.

It seriously makes you think for a second whether the movie industry and talented actors such as Deepika Padukone, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood, Abhishek and SRK have run out of acting options. Better than the utterly bad Express(Rohit Shetty; I liked Singham Returns); Happy New Year is a set of jokes so throughly contrived and useless; that one may not be able to speak in disgust. After the disaster that was “Tees Mar”(with Akshay Kumar); one expected something better from director Farah Khan.

But; in the progressive dumbing down of India; we have a movie that touches on stereotypical Hindi film dialogues and eminently does not make any sense. The bad guy in the new age is a bozo Grover(played by Jackie “Bhai” Shroff) and our noble long-suffering Hindi film hero Shri Sharma(SRK) and his father(Anupam Kher).

Boo Hoo! I see sob stories every day in the news; and considering the fact that Hindi movies have become a lot more innovative recently in terms of stories; there was an expectation of something different. But; the director and the great Indian masses probably know better. Whatever this movie seemed to evoke in other people; “Happy New Year” was a cumbersome rehash of old themes; and only the grand Dubai scenery shown in the movie was some respite from what was ultimately gruel when we expected a biryani. Sincerely hoping; the filmmaker makes something more entertaining the next time around.
